Welcome Book Clubs! We hope you find the resources and videos we have provided helpful in your discussions.

After 30 years of war, some eight million people had fled their homes, most of them to neighboring Pakistan and Iran. In the wake of the fall of the Taliban, more than five million Afghans have returned home. The major challenges to returning are primarily lack of housing, jobs, and safe drinking water.

The Khaled Hosseini Foundation is partnering with the United Nations refugee organization (UNHCR) to provide the materials and know-how to help Afghans build their own homes. Shelter is especially important in Afghanistan where the average temperature is 25 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Families without shelter typically lose their children and elderly to the cold.

Your book club can help shelter homeless refugee families by fund raising—even small amounts help. Just $2,320 builds a home that can house six people.:

  • Just $240 provides shelter tool kits for 4 families;
  • $360 provides shelter tool kits for 6 families;
  • $465 provides the doors and windows to complete a shelter;
  • $2,320 makes it possible for a family to construct their home from start to finish and begin a new life with renewed hope and safety.

"There are many complicated problems to tackle in Afghanistan, but providing a foundation — literally — for its returning population is the key to everything."

—Khaled Hosseini
