Khaled Hosseini, Founder and President

In 1989, Khaled entered the University of California at San Diego's School of Medicine, where he earned a Medical Degree in 1993. Khaled earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1988 from Santa Clara University. He completed his residency at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Khaled was a practicing internist between 1996 and 2004. While practicing medicine, Khaled began writing his first novel, The Kite Runner, in March of 2001. In 2003, The Kite Runner, was published and has since become an international bestseller, published in 70 countries. In 2006 he was named a Goodwill Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR. His second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns was published in May of 2007 and has been published in 60 countries. Khaled has been working to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan through The Khaled Hosseini Foundation.


Roya Hosseini, Co-founder and Chairperson

Roya received her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law, cum laude in 1997, serving as the Managing Editor of Southwestern University’s Law Review from 1996-1997 and a member of the Moot Court Honors Program from 1995-1996. She received her B.A. in Rhetoric at University of California at Berkeley in 1991. Upon graduating from law school, Roya served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Kathleen P. March, United States Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California. She worked as a corporate attorney with Graham & James LLP and Fenwick & West LLP from 1998-2001 with a focus on venture capital financings and emerging growth companies. Roya then practiced in-house at Intel Capital, the venture capital arm of Intel Corporation, from 2004-2006. Roya currently holds a license to practice law in California and is in good standing with the State Bar of California.  Roya is the Co-Founder of The Khaled Hosseini Foundation and wife of Khaled Hosseini.


Sandra Hosseini, Executive Director

Sandra joined the Foundation as Executive Director. Prior to this she worked as Revenue Accounting Manager for Symantec Corporation for over 5 years. From 1999 to 2003 she held accounting positions at Arthur Andersen LLP and then KPMG LLP. Sandra graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelors of Science in Accounting from San Jose State University in 1999 and received her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in 2004. Sandra currently holds an inactive CPA license in good standing with the California Board of Accountancy.


Lisa Cendejas, Executive Assistant

Lisa joined the Foundation as an Executive Assistant. Lisa also works at Silver Oak School as a school aide working with the students. Lisa has eight years of extensive experience providing counseling and case management services for at risk teens. She received a Bachelor's degree in Women's Studies with an emphasis in Psychology from UC Davis in 1988. Upon graduating from UC Davis, Lisa worked at Planned Parenthood as a counselor in their Teen Success Program. Lisa went on to work for six years at the Bill Wilson Center in Santa Clara where she helped open and run Quetzal House; a home for chronic runaway teenage girls. In addition, she was the Case Manager for their Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Teen Parents. In 1994, Lisa graduated with a Master's in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University. Lisa currently holds an inactive Marriage and Family Therapist license in good standing with the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California.


Parisa Mirza-Khan, Project Coordinator

Parisa received her Associates in Arts in 1998 from Foothill College in Los Altos Hills and graduated with high honors. She furthered her education and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from San Jose State University in 2000 and became a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. Prior to joining the foundation, Parisa was the Director of Marketing & Sales at Preoria Inc., a software company located in the East Coast. She was the head of leading and directing the development and implementations of strategic sales and marketing plans to make the company succeed in financial profitability. Parisa has been involved in other non-profit organizations and is compelled to help those in need.
